This is the front cover of my college magazine. The colour scheme is purple green and white. The Image is a medium close up of two students facing the camera. The masthead reads 'C-level' - the C stands for College. This is the finished product for my magazine front cover.

This is the start of the front cover of my magazine. I have included a backgrond image of two college students. The image is shot medium close-up against a white background. The masthead of the magazine reads 'C-level'. I have placed a subheading which reads'College Culture!' i still need to make some adjustments and include more text but what you see above, is just a start.

Evaluation of DPS

My evaluation of my DPS

My magazine page ‘Kingpin explores’ was built using various bits of information I acquired through the internet, reading and during media class. ‘Kingpin explores’ is a page devoted to the positive aspects of file sharing and how it profits artists. To acquire the pieces of information I had to search the internet with different queries to fish out the important parts that had a greater impact. I searched for quotes from famous singers, rappers and actors. I selected one, from Nas, an American rapper, that I thought had great impact ‘While downloads occur on a vast scale, most users are likely individuals who would from zero,” they wrote “not have bought the album even in the absence of file sharing’. My main reference for this article was from a website called ‘electronista’ (http://www.electronista.com/articles/09/01/20/dutch.study.file.sharing/). This web site held the majority of my information. Another website that I used was called ‘Guardian’. I didn’t include much information from this site but I used it to back up some of my already said points.

I aimed to make this article for teenagers and I aimed to give it a street/hip hop feel. I did this by using large bold font as the title and kept to the colour scheme of red and black. The text is filled with facts and figures which are easy to take in – sharp and to the point. I preferred not to use direct address in this double page spread as I weren’t trying to pinpoint people. I simply wanted to make it easy and interesting to read.

To create this DPS I used computer software called InDesign.  I found InDesign very simple to use as its straightforward and pretty much like using a slightly more complex Microsoft word or PowerPoint. Although I found it pretty easy to use I did run into a few minor problems. One of these was the placement and enlargement of images. At one point I couldn’t make an image the correct size and there was too much blank space but I managed to resolve the problem. I hadn’t selected the correct tool. I was on the text tool instead of the selection tool. In the end I managed to get the placement of images and enlarge them enough to how I deemed suitable.   I made use of three images, two black and white and one in colour. I think that black and white look good on the document because if there was too much colour the colour scheme may have been destroyed. The main image is a large black and white image of a world famous rapper ‘Dr Dre’ on stage with a microphone. I think this image draws in an audience of teenagers; most teens know of this rapper and would be intrigued to find out what place he holds in the magazine spread ‘Kingpin explores’. I used a black and white picture of Nas to usher in a pull quote. I think the picture has good placement as it is separate from the main text so readers won’t be confused. Also the quote underneath is red so readers know that it is separate from the main text. The third image is a dark coloured image that is used mainly as a filler to decrease the blank spaces. This image is of a recording studio. The main title ‘Kingpin explores’ makes use of two different colours and two different fonts. The letter ’k’ in ‘Kingpin’ is larger than the rest of the font and is red. The rest of the title is white. The word ‘Kingpin is written in font ‘Franklin Gothic Heavy’. The word ‘Explores’ is written in font ‘Harlow Solid Italic’. I used two different fonts to create a variation so the DPS won’t seem boring.

Setting up my blog was very simple. It is just like setting up a new email or Facebook account. Uploading the jpeg format of my DPS was also very simple. I found this part of the assignment to be very simple. I used Blogger so classmates could give me constructive criticism.  Parts that my classmates liked were the colour scheme. “The colours go well together”.  The layout and structure was good with good use of space and pictures.

Parts that I need to consider to improve were to enlarge the quote and make it bolder. One of my classmates didn’t like the use of a border.

Four points to improve are: enlarge certain quotes, Font size wasn’t suited to the DPS, include more information and use direct address.
